After about 8 years of anticipation, Spotify Lossless Audio is finally rolling out to Premium subscribers in select markets at no extra cost. Music lovers like myself have long requested this feature, and now they can stream tracks in crystal-clear quality, unlocking every detail of their favorite songs.

With Spotify Lossless, Premium users can enjoy up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC audio — a massive step up for audiophiles and casual listeners alike. And just to note, Spotify HiFi is no longer a term or part of the Premium tiers (for now) as it was introduced back in 2021’s Spotify Stream On Event.

What is Lossless Audio?

Lossless audio refers to music files that preserve every detail of the original recording without compression that cuts out quality. Unlike MP3 or standard streaming formats, Spotify Lossless delivers audio in FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec), meaning you hear music exactly as the artist intended. Think of it as the difference between watching a video in standard definition versus full HD.

How Spotify Lossless Improves Your Listening Experience

Spotify’s VP of Subscriptions, Gustav Gyllenhammar, put it best: “We’ve taken time to build this feature in a way that prioritizes quality, ease of use, and clarity at every step.” Here’s what that means for you:

  • Higher quality streams: Up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC audio quality.
  • Custom settings: Choose your preferred quality for Wi-Fi, cellular, and downloads.
  • Flexibility: Switch between Low, Normal, High, Very High, and now Lossless, depending on your data needs.
  • Device support: Available on mobile, desktop, tablet, and Spotify Connect-enabled devices.

Supported Devices for Spotify Lossless

Lossless audio is available across many devices, including brands like Sony, Bose, Samsung, and Sennheiser. Spotify has also announced that support for Sonos and Amazon devices will roll out soon. Whether you’re streaming on your desktop setup or enjoying wireless speakers, Spotify is making sure you have options.

Pro Tip: Wired > Bluetooth (For Now)

While you can stream lossless over Wi-Fi, keep in mind that Bluetooth currently compresses audio. For the purest sound, use wired headphones, high-quality speakers, or Spotify Connect-enabled devices. Wireless headphones with LDAC and Hi-Res Audio capabilities are good for Lossless audio.

How to Enable Spotify Lossless Audio

Activating Spotify Lossless is simple. Here’s a quick step-by-step:

  1. Open the Spotify app and tap your profile icon.
  2. Go to Settings & Privacy → Media Quality.
  3. Select Lossless for Wi-Fi, cellular, and/or downloads.
  4. Repeat this process on each device you use.

You’ll know it’s on when you see the Lossless indicator in your Now Playing bar or the Connect Picker.

There’s one thing to note: Spotify’s Lossless option tops out at 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. Meanwhile, competitors like Apple Music, Tidal, and Qobuz go further, offering HiRes FLAC support up to 24-bit/192 kHz.

Now, does this matter to the average listener? Honestly, not much. Once you’re in 24-bit FLAC territory, the difference becomes incredibly subtle—unless you’re an audiophile with a sound system worth as much as a used car.

Where and When Can You Use Spotify Lossless?

At the momnent, Spotify is rolling out Lossless gradually across 50+ markets through October. Premium subscribers in the US, UK, Germany, Sweden, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and more are already getting access.

Currently, Kenyans might have to wait till end of this year/beginning of 2026, incase the rollout delays. So if you don’t see it yet, stay tuned—your notification is coming (very) soon.

Why Spotify Lossless Matters

With competitors like Apple Music and Tidal already offering high-resolution audio, Spotify needed to step up. This launch not only keeps Spotify competitive but also enhances its Premium value, sitting alongside other standout features like DJ, AI Playlist, Jam, Mix, and Daylist.

The Future of Streaming is Lossless

The arrival of Spotify Lossless Audio marks a huge leap forward for music streaming quality. This makes YouTube Music the only music streaming platform without lossless for the time being.

Whether you’re an audiophile or just someone who wants their playlists to sound better than ever, this update takes the Spotify Premium experience to the next level. If you’re a subscriber, check your app and unlock the full richness of your favorite music today.
